Does compressing an image lose quality?
Compressing as JPEG or WebP is a lossy process, so some image detail is discarded to reduce file size. The quality slider lets you balance file size against visual quality, and at high quality settings the loss is usually hard to notice.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Every image is decoded, compressed, and re-encoded entirely inside your browser using the HTML canvas API. Your files are never transmitted anywhere, which also means there is no upload wait.
Which image formats are supported?
You can upload JPG, PNG or WebP images, and choose to keep the original format or output as JPEG or WebP. PNG output uses lossless re-encoding, so its file size reduction is typically smaller than JPEG or WebP.
Why didn't my PNG get much smaller?
PNG is a lossless format, so the compressor can only re-encode the pixel data more efficiently rather than discard detail. For a bigger reduction on photos, convert the output format to JPEG or WebP using the format selector.
What quality setting should I use?
A quality of 70-85% is a good starting point for photos, offering a substantial file size reduction with minimal visible difference. Go higher for images with fine detail or text, and lower if file size matters more than appearance.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no hard-coded limit, but very large images (above roughly 40 megapixels) can be slow to process or exceed your browser's memory, since everything runs on your device rather than a server.
Will this tool resize my image dimensions?
