Frequently Asked Questions

How is the word count calculated?

The tool splits your text on whitespace and counts each resulting chunk as one word. Empty lines and extra spaces between words are ignored, so the count reflects what a person would actually read as separate words.

How is reading time estimated?

Reading time is estimated at 200 words per minute, the commonly cited average adult silent-reading speed. Speaking time is estimated at 130 words per minute, a typical pace for reading text aloud.

Does the counter include spaces in the character count?

Two figures are shown: total characters including every space and line break, and characters excluding whitespace. Many platforms with character limits, like social media, count the first figure.

How are sentences and paragraphs detected?

Sentences are detected by splitting on runs of period, question mark, or exclamation mark characters. Paragraphs are detected by blank lines, meaning any line break followed by another line break.

What is keyword density and why does it matter?

Keyword density shows how often each significant word appears relative to the total word count, after filtering out common filler words like "the" and "and". Writers and SEO editors use it to spot overused words or confirm a target keyword appears often enough.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. All counting happens locally in your browser using JavaScript. Your text is never transmitted to a server, logged, or stored.

Does this tool work for languages other than English?

Word, character, sentence and paragraph counts work for any language using whitespace-separated words. Keyword density filtering is tuned for common English filler words, so results for other languages will count all words without filtering.
